Before adding your initials

Start by reading the instructions in the contract. Some documents specify exactly which pages to initial, the area to use or any wording to copy out. Others only ask for a final signature. Adding initials everywhere without checking may hide information or not match the expected procedure.

Initial the contract step by step

  1. Import the contract into the tool. In this local mode, the content of the PDF is not sent to the server.
  2. Create your initials. Draw initials that are legible and compact enough not to cover the text.
  3. Place the initials. Choose a blank corner. Parapheo creates the series on every page of the PDF.
  4. Remove unnecessary copies. If the cover or an appendix should not be initialled, delete only that copy.
  5. Adjust the series. Move or resize one set of initials to apply the same adjustment to the others in the group.
  6. Add the date, a statement or the final signature. Use the fields provided in the contract.
  7. Export, then review the PDF. Check every page, the file name and that the last page is there.

Initialling yourself or getting a third party to sign

If you are the person completing the contract, use local mode. If someone else needs to sign on their own device, the get a PDF signed workflow sends an encrypted request to a single recipient. It is not yet a group workflow for successive signatures.

Initials do not replace every formality

The French Civil Code, article 1367 describes the function of the signature of a legal act and the general conditions for an electronic signature. Visual initials alone do not allow you to conclude that a formality or a level of signature has been met. For an important or regulated contract, check the instructions with the recipient or a qualified professional.

Limitation: this guide explains how the tool works and the practical checks to make. It does not determine the validity of any particular contract and does not constitute legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to initial every page of a contract?

Not always. It depends on the document and the instructions you have received. Do not initial a page just because it exists in the PDF.

Can I initial and sign the same PDF?

Yes. Parapheo lets you add initials, a signature, a date and text in the same local workflow.

What does “initialled and signed contract” mean?

It generally describes a document bearing initials on certain pages and a main signature. This wording does not, on its own, determine the legal level of the method used.
